Status of Industrial Revolution (IR) 4.0 Applications Amongst Furniture Manufacturers in Malaysia and its Benefits

Synopsis: What are the benefits of IR 4.0 among furniture manufacturers in Malaysia? Get an insight into the experience of manufacturers who have embarked on this journey. This presentation is part of an international research project funded by the European Union (EU) with Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) as the partner. It is the first such long-term study on this topic which has far reaching relevance to the furniture industry.

Prof. Dr. Jegatheswaran Ratnasingam is the leading authority on the Malaysian furniture sector, with more than 30 years in the industry and academia. He has consulted extensively for many furniture manufacturers throughout Asia and authored over 700 publications. He is Professor of Furniture Manufacturing & Management at the Faculty of Forestry, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and a Senior Research Fellow of the International Furniture Research Group. Voted the most outstanding furniture researcher with impactful research outputs in Asia by the Industrial Finance Forum of Asia (IFFA) in 2018.

Innovative Wood Drying Technology for Value-Added Furniture and other Wood-Based Products

Synopsis: FRIM works in tandem with stakeholders from wood-based sectors for the advancement of indigenous and innovative wood processing technologies. Find out more about FRIM’s High Temperature Drying (FRIM HTD®) programme, a green initiative which promotes the use of rubberwood and acacia wood, the two major plantation species in ASEAN region, and other plantation timber species.

Dr Sik Huei Shing is Head of Wood Drying Laboratory at FRIM. Her doctoral research work dealt extensively on developing high temperature lumber treatment technology based on local innovation. A key researcher who won the Malaysian National Innovation Award in 2013, National Intellectual Property Award in 2014 and recipient of Outstanding Doctoral Research Award by International Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO) in 2014.

Tul Lekutai is graduate in architecture from Chiangmai University and is involved in diverse creative fields Founded Deco Moda Studio in 2003 and in 2017, he established Thailand visual practitioners spearhead team called Pictures Talk. He is currently a board member of International forum of Visual Practitioners, USA.

Walter Tan is an industry veteran with 26 years of experience, Walter Tan designs and develops a variety of furniture for markets all over the world. Elemental Republic is a wooden furniture manufacturer in China. He is also a furniture design consultant for a Sydney-based company. Mentor to a group of young designers called “Pattern Banyak” for the Millennials@Design showcase in MIFF in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

A fine arts graduate of Marmara University, Atilla Kuzu has won a string of awards at home and abroad. He is the co-founder of Zoom / TPU with Levent Çırpıcı for design projects and implementation. His works have been recognised by IFDA Japan, WAF Awards, Aga Han Architecture Awards and in 2016, Atilla Kuzu was selected “Designer of The Year” at Elle Decor International Design Awards. He still works on furniture designs and as well as interior design and architectural projects.
